Visual Artist and Musician Educational Programs Music and Art Beyond Boundaries
Tina S. Larkin has always been musically inclined. Her first instrument was an electric guitar at the age of 10 (“I wanted to be a Beatle, but the boys neither wanted nor needed a 10-year-old member”). Eventually Ms. Larkin learned to play the fiddle, her true love. Many years were invested in learning Irish fiddle tunes performed in authentic County Clare style. She studied Irish Gaelic at the University of Texas and sings in Gaelic, Hebrew and English. Always interested in fine art, Ms. Larkin won a scholarship to study painting at Pratt Institute in New York, where she completed a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. She sees a tremendous correlation between art and music (visit the art link above). Ms. Larkin entered regional Fleadh Cheoil (Irish Music Competitions) and won awards in Fiddling and Singing. Also a player of the harp, she is one of a handful of Klezmer harpists in the world. Ms. Larkin has 20 years of experience as a performer and a music educator for adults and children. In 1998, she attended the Suzuki Summer Institute at the University of Wisconsin and received her Teacher’s Training in Suzuki Violin. She has also taught Irish fiddling at the college level at the University of Alaska, and now teaches Celtic fiddling and harp. Ms. Larkin composes music in her spare time.
Music Time Machine What did young people do at a party 400 years ago without an Ipod or CD player? If they made their own music what kind of party music did they have? What was the rock and roll, the hip-hop of the 16th century? What was on the ‘Top 40’ in the 1400’s? What were the really cool musical instruments of those times? Find out all this and more in this hands-on presentation! Tina Larkin dresses in period costume. Scottish Sword dancing will be taught, and instruments are provided. For the Extended Program, students build a Family Tree of Old and Modern Musical Instruments.
Rhythm Around the World Program
Students and the drums they created
What exactly is rhythm? Do we need a drum or any musical instrumenta to make rhythm? How different is rhythm in different parts of the world? Ms. Larkin supplies percussive instruments and demonstrates different rhythms. The second part of this presentation is a hands-on activity for those in the audience. We explore the ancient language of African drumming. Very enjoyable and pressure-free. For the Extended Program, participants decorate their own drums, and learn rhythm patterns and write, direct and act in their own skits utilizing the drum patterns they learned on the first day.
Violins vs Fiddles Program! Are they different instruments or the same instrument playing different music with different techniques? Tina Larkin is the perfect person to present this fun program. She is an award-winning Celtic fiddler who has studied in Ireland, specializes in county Clare-style fiddling, and has taught fiddling technique to many orchestra violinists. Ms. Larkin also is a registered Suzuki Violin instructor, having received her Suzuki Violin Teacher training at the Suzuki Summer Institute at the University Of Wisconsin. This presentation can be utilized as an excellent special workshop for any strings class. For the Extended Program, participants create collages inspired by jazz, celtic or classical music. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the incredible similarities between music and visual art!
